Whether you’re building a SaaS tool, an internal dashboard, or a client-facing app — getting login right is non-negotiable.
What Is Lovable and Why Does Auth Matter

What You Need Before You Start
Before you write a single prompt in Lovable, get these in place:
- A Lovable account and an active project

- Your Supabase Project URL and anon key (found in Project Settings → API)
- Optionally: a Google Cloud account if you want Google OAuth

The Core Components of a Login Page
Every working login system in a Lovable app needs four things:
A Login Page — The /login route with email/password fields (and optionally social login buttons).
A Supabase Connection — Your project must be linked to Supabase so authentication logic, user records, and session tokens have somewhere to live.
A Profiles Table — Supabase stores auth users in a protected schema. You need a separate profiles table in your public schema to store user data your app can actually read.

Connect Your Lovable App to Supabase
This is the foundation. Everything else depends on it.
Step 1 — Create or open your Supabase project
Log into supabase.com, create a new project, and wait for it to spin up. Once ready, go to Project Settings → API and copy your Project URL and anon key.
Step 2 — Connect inside Lovable
In your Lovable project, navigate to settings or integrations and select Supabase. Paste in your Project URL and anon key, then save. Lovable will fetch your database schema and security settings automatically.
Step 3 — Confirm the connection
Lovable will show a confirmation that your project is linked. From this point, any prompt you give Lovable can reference your Supabase backend directly — authentication, database reads, edge functions.
Build the Login Page with a Prompt
Here’s where Lovable’s power really shows. Instead of writing authentication code by hand, you give it a structured prompt.
Use something like this:

Configure Supabase Authentication Settings
The Supabase dashboard controls several critical settings that Lovable can’t configure for you. Go to Authentication → Providers in your Supabase dashboard and make sure:
- Email provider is enabled
- Confirm email is turned ON — without this, anyone can sign up with any email address
- Secure email change is ON
- Minimum password length is set to at least 8 characters
Then go to Authentication → URL Configuration and set:
- Site URL to your Lovable app’s production domain (e.g., https://yourapp.lovable.app)
- Redirect URLs to include your callback URL: https://yourapp.lovable.app/auth/callback
These settings prevent broken redirect flows and ensure confirmation emails actually work.
Add Google OAuth (Optional but Recommended)
Email/password login works. But Google Sign-In dramatically improves conversion — users don’t have to create yet another account. They click, they’re in.
Step 1 — Enable Google in Supabase
In your Supabase dashboard, go to Authentication → Providers → Google and toggle it on. You’ll need a Client ID and Client Secret.
Step 2 — Create Google OAuth credentials
Go to Google Cloud Console, create a project, and set up an OAuth 2.0 client. Under Authorized redirect URIs, paste your Supabase callback URL — found in the Supabase Google provider settings.
Step 3 — Paste credentials into Supabase
Copy the Client ID and Client Secret from Google Cloud and paste them into Supabase’s Google provider settings. Save.
Step 4 — Add a Google Sign-In button via Lovable prompt
Add a “Continue with Google” button to my /login page.
On click, it should trigger Supabase OAuth with provider: ‘google’
and redirect to /auth/callback after authentication.
Lovable will handle the button UI and OAuth trigger. The callback route exchanges the Google auth code for a Supabase session.
Protect Routes for Authenticated Users Only
A login page is useless if someone can just type /dashboard directly into their browser and skip it.
Route protection ensures every sensitive page checks for a valid session — and redirects to /login if none exists.
Give Lovable this prompt:
Add route protection to /dashboard and all other private pages.
If a user is not authenticated (no active Supabase session),
redirect them to /login automatically.
For apps with more complex access needs, you can also use Supabase’s Row Level Security (RLS) policies to control which users can read or modify specific database records — not just which pages they can visit.
Add a Logout Button
Don’t forget this step. A login system without a logout option is a security hole.
Prompt Lovable:
Add a logout button to my /dashboard page header.
On click, it should call supabase.auth.signOut()
and redirect the user back to /login.
Keep the logout button visible and accessible. Users expect to find it in the top-right corner or inside a profile dropdown.
Add a Dev Bypass for Faster Testing (Remove Before Launch)
If you’re iterating quickly, logging in manually every time you want to test a page slows you down. Add a temporary bypass button to your /login page during development:

Critical: Remove this before you go live. A bypass button on a production app is a serious vulnerability.
Test Your Authentication End-to-End

- Sign in with your credentials — confirm you land on /dashboard
- Try accessing /dashboard logged out — confirm you’re redirected to /login
- Sign in with Google — confirm the OAuth flow completes and you’re authenticated
- Sign out — confirm the session ends and you’re back at /login
- Wrong password — confirm the error message appears without crashing the page
If all six checks pass, your auth system is working correctly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Not enabling email confirmation. Anyone can sign up with a fake or someone else’s email. Always turn this on in Supabase before launching.
Missing the callback route. OAuth and magic link flows need a /auth/callback route to exchange the auth code for a session. Without it, social logins silently fail.
Checking authentication only on the client side. Client-side auth checks can be bypassed. Always verify the session on the server side in protected routes.
Forgetting to update redirect URLs for production. If your Supabase URL config still points to localhost, auth flows will break the moment you deploy.
No Row Level Security on database tables. Anyone with your anon key can read all your data if RLS isn’t enabled. Go to Supabase → Table Editor and enable RLS on every table that stores user data.
Alternative Authentication Options
